This resource includes over 60 cards for learning and applying the following research-based vocabulary strategies:
PART OF SPEECH: teach students to identify an unknown word’s part of speech using syntactic and semantic clues, and to apply that knowledge when defining unknown words in sentences.
WORD PARTS: learn about common prefixes, suffixes, and root words and use those word parts to understand the meaning of an unknown word
CONTEXT CLUES: use different key words to determine which type of context clue is used, and how that clue can help us better understand a word
COMBINED PRACTICE: synthesize all three strategies by defining unknown words in sentences
This resource also includes several visuals for each strategy that can be used during structured activities or while reading longer texts. It was created for older speech and language students (5th-12th grade) and can be either printed and laminated or used as a digital PDF.
