The Higher-Level Language Skills Informal Inventory (HILLS-II) is an informal assessment of metalinguistic awareness, or the ability to consciously think about and reflect upon oral and written language.
This informal assessment examines the following four area of metalinguistic awareness: making inferences, understanding figurative language, understanding text structures, and monitoring comprehension. This inventory is intended to provide an informal snapshot of a student's strengths and needs when applying these skills across varying contexts increasing in both length and complexity.
The first section assesses foundational skills for each of these areas, while the second section probes application in the context of oral and written passages. The clinician reads each question aloud, and prompt pages are provided to the student for some portions of the assessment. A sample report is also included at the end of this resource.
This informal inventory is intended for older speech and language students - ideally, 5th-12th grade. SLPs should use their clinical judgement when determining eligibility for services.
